    Default Eleuthera

    :Hi Bahamas',

Am attempting to plan a vacation in the bahamas for March 2005. We travel in a group of around 16 people each year(8 hotel rooms)Nassau seems too commercial and busy, Harbour Island seems too remote.Thought maybe Eleuthera might be the right "in-between" place. We enjoy staying at 3 Star resorts. We're all 40 "something" in age. Relaxing around the pool with a drink, sunbathing on the sand, shopping within walking distance for the ladies and deep sea fishing for the guys.We all appreciate snorkeling, para-sailing and visiting local spots of interest. Also on our list, is eating at local restaurants/bar/grill.

The Bahamas is a large area, so choosing the right island is a daunting task. Any help is appreciated.

Our group has had vacations at Ocotal, Costa Rica and Ramon's Village,Ambergris Caye,Belize. We are looking for similar accomodations in the Bahamas'.

Again, any assistance in choosing an island or hotel is greatfully appreciated!

You may wish to try Freeport, Grand Bahama..... no offense to Eleuthera, but Freeport is more or what you are looking for, Eleuthera too will likely be a bit more laid back than you anticipate.. Beautiful Island, but the Shopping etc. is basically non-existent.

    Hi Tami,

Unfortunately, all of the islands are pretty remote, with the exception of Nassau and perhaps Freeport. In the order of development, it's probably Nassau, Freeport, Abaco, Eleuthera, etc. Freeport is an interesting combination of Nassau and the other islands. It's only commercial enough to allow for some shopping, but [due to its population and pace] is still not as hectic as Nassau.

Abaco is less remote than Harbour Island, and so is Eleuthera--both are excellent vacation spots, but the shopping will definitely be lacking in both places. I will say that if you decide on Eleuthera (Governor's Harbour), you do have the option of taking a $90 roundtrip boat ride to Nassau for a day or weekend. The ride is only three hours and it's a whole lot of fun. Otherwise, Freeport may be your best bet. It has the restaurants and shopping, but isn't nearly as busy as Nassau.

    All the best,
    Daneen.
