    Default Teaching in the Bahamas

I am applying to do some student teaching in the Bahamas. I am in the process of trying to create some type of budget. I will be there probably b/t February and April. Can someone inform me what the estimated cost of local transportation would be? Is it difficult to travel around the island? Does anyone know how much families usually charge for rent? Any other information that could be provided for a struggling student would be much appreciated.

What Island is the job you have been offered?
    It makes a big difference.
If it is Nassau, you can figure a safe apartment (not near the water) for 1 will run you from $800 - $1200 per month plus utliities, family size apartments, of course would be closer to $1800. Phones are nearly impossible to get on such a short notice ( some wait for a year to get them, and there is a sizable deposit) The cost of living is about 30% more than the states. ( Think NYC plus ).
The good news that the jitneys run all over the island, and only cost $1. If you intend to drive, make sure your apartment is close to your job, since traffic is hell at rush hour. If you are planning on purchasing a car, figure the price of the car in the state, plue 52% TAX. New or Used.

I suggest you visit and talk to the locals to get more details.
The Bahamas is certainly a vacation Paradise, I can't say the same for living and working here.

    Default Student teaching in Bahamas

there are a few websites that may be informative for you. I do recall reading on one of them about a "People to People" prgram that may be of assistance to you. It matches you with someone in your field that you can communicate with and while there possibly stay with. Depending on your personal preferences and theirs. Like Tamara said, it does depend on what island you will be going to. You can also check with the school that you will be teaching at to if they have any accomodations or can assist you with finding any. I do know also that there are some hostels located there that you may check in on.
